"My favourite artwork at home is a butterfly from the Souls I series, by the well-known contemporary artist Damien Hirst. The butterfly comes from a special series. It looks more beautiful in real life than on a photo or on an image in a magazine, due to the specialised printing methods. The 'foilblock' print is even more beautiful when it is hit by the light, and it looks surprising from every angle. This was Hirst's intention, to create a similar feeling as you’d have when looking at real light reflecting butterflies.
Because of Covid, I spend much more time at home than usual: we are enjying our home, and our art, even more.
I bought the work in 2015 after seeing it at Eric Kuster several years before. I have always liked it, it remained in my memory and I eventually bought it at Kunsthuizen, where I have formed a pleasant relationship with the owners over the years. After this purchase, I regularly bought contemporary art, pop art, street art and photography from their gallery.
The work is hung in our living area, surrounded by black and white images from films, sketches by Selwyn Senatori and a photo of my wife Floor Schothorst, taken by the famous photographer Rankin. All in black and white, so that the butterfly and its colours stand out even more. Because of Covid, I spend much more time at home than usual. It does take some getting used to, because I am used to being on the road a lot due to work. Yet privately, this is very nice, especially with our two daughters of 2 years and 6 months old. And that is why we are also enjoying our home, and our art, even more."
